Book Arts Group of Santa Fe

Join Maternal Mitochondria for a presentation on June 8th, from 1-3pm, in the Santa Fe Community College Boardroom. We will be speaking to the members of the Santa Fe Book Arts Group about our collaborative work, community projects, and how and why we utilize suminagashi along with poetry in our art. This event is free and open to the public, you do not have to be a member of BAG to come! We look forward to seeing you there.

Japan Fest

Come join us for the 2019 Santa Fe Japanese Cultural Festival!

When: 11am-3pm, May 11th, 2019.

Where: Santa Fe Convention Center

Maternal Mitochondria will be at this year’s Japanese Cultural Festival! Catch us on Saturday, May 11th at the Santa Fe Convention Center. We’ll be doing a demonstration/workshop combo on the Japanese art of suminagashi, or ink painting. There will also be lots of performances, vendors, and Japanese food! Maternal Mitochondria will be there from 11am-3pm, but the festival itself runs from 9:30am-5pm. Admission is $5 for adults, and free for children under 12. Visit the website for more information.

Spilled Ink

Found a copy of Maternal Mitochondria’s art project Spilled Ink in the shelves… If someone tries to buy this, Collected Works Bookstore is going to be really confused! Spilled Ink is a small chapbook filled with poetry, photography, and suminagashi from an artist residency at Wildacres in North Carolina. We had just read Amanda Palmer’s The Art of Asking, and I participated in the community that grew up around the book, sending free copies to people around the world (and sometimes getting weird, awesome book art in return). So we decided that Spilled Ink would not be purchasable, and would mostly be given to people who asked for it… I say mostly because I definitely foisted off a few on my poor friends! So it’s super fun to still find copies of this hidden around town.

Suminagashi is traditional Japanese marbling. The effect is beautiful, but it is also a meditative practice to quiet and focus the mind. It is composed by allowing a basin of water to still, and then adding ink to the water. The ink can be traditional black calligraphy ink, or more modern colored ones, including acrylic. The pattern is composed by adding drops of ink within each other. As they expand, they create the traditional fractal look of mountains and rivers, or coastlines. The pattern can then by manipulated by blowing on it, using a brush, or even a hair to gently move it. It is said that a master of suminagashi has only two percent control of the outcome.

I’ve got a show coming up at a local diy venue in Santa Fe, Zephyr! There will be an opening & a suminagashi workshop as well. Not all of the pieces I’m posting here will be there, but these are all large works (22″x30″) and most of them will be for sale. The show will also feature a few other, smaller pieces.
